How Wine Kits Work: A Beginner's Guide
Dizzy GrapeShare
So You Want to Make Wine?
Making wine at home is more approachable than you might think — and far more rewarding. Wine kits take the guesswork out of the process by providing pre-measured ingredients, clear instructions, and consistent results. Whether you're a complete first-timer or a seasoned home winemaker, there's a kit designed for exactly where you are.
This guide walks you through: what a wine kit actually is, what the process looks like from start to bottle, and how our on-site brewing service can help if you'd rather have expert hands involved.
What Is a Wine Kit?
A wine kit is a complete package containing grape juice concentrate (or juice), yeast, fining agents, and all the additives needed to produce a finished wine. You supply the equipment, the water, and a little patience — the kit handles the rest.
Kits are available in a wide range of styles: reds, whites, rosés, and fruit wines. Quality tiers range from everyday table wines to premium, small-batch expressions that rival bottles you'd find at a specialty wine shop.

The Wine-Making Process, Step by Step
Every kit follows the same basic arc. Here's what to expect:
Step 1 — Sanitize Your Equipment
Clean equipment is the single most important factor in making good wine. Your kit will include sanitizing instructions. We take this step seriously — it takes 15 minutes and protects weeks of work.
Step 2 — Mix Your Must
Combine the juice concentrate with water in your primary fermenter (that big ol' bucket). Add the yeast and any Day 1 additives included in your kit. Give it a good stir, seal it up, and let fermentation begin.
Step 3 — Primary Fermentation (Days 1–7)
Yeast converts the sugars in the juice into alcohol. You'll see bubbling activity — that's a great sign. Keep your fermenter in a stable, room-temperature environment (ideally 65–75°F / 18–24°C). We try to keep our shop right around 22°C.
Step 4 — Secondary Fermentation & Clearing (Weeks 2–6+)
Transfer your wine to a carboy (secondary vessel) and add the fining agents that help the wine clear and stabilize. This is the patience phase — the wine is doing its thing. Check in periodically but resist the urge to rush it.
Step 5 — Bottling
Once your wine is clear and stable, it's time to bottle. Sanitize your bottles, siphon the wine in, cork or cap, and label. Then comes the hardest part: waiting a little longer for it to condition in the bottle.
Step 6 — Enjoy
Pour a glass. You made that.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need special equipment to make it at home?
Yes — a basic equipment kit (primary fermenter, carboy, siphon, sanitizer) is needed. You'll often find people selling used equipment on Marketplace, at thrift stores, or you can grab the whole thing on Amazon here.
How much wine does a kit make?
Most kits produce approximately 23 litres (about 30 bottles / 6 cases). Some smaller kits yield 15–16 litres.
Can I mess it up?
The most common issues — off flavours, slow fermentation, cloudy wine — are almost always caused by poor sanitation or temperature swings. Follow the kit instructions, keep things clean, and you'll be in great shape. And if something seems off, we're here to help troubleshoot.
What if I don't have space or equipment?
That's what our Brewing Service is for. No equipment, no space, no problem.
How do I know which kit to buy?
Start with the style of wine you enjoy drinking. If you're brand new, a fruit wine kit is a low-pressure, high-reward starting point. Come in and chat with us — we love helping people find their first kit.
